How to choose a mobile mechanic

Start with the work you need

A mechanic experienced in routine servicing may not be the right fit for specialist transmission, hybrid high-voltage or complex European diagnostics. Describe the vehicle and fault accurately and ask whether the work is suitable for a mobile setting.

What to compare

• Relevant qualifications and repairer requirements
• Experience with the vehicle or symptom
• Clear scope, quote or estimate
• Parts and fluid specifications
• Itemised records and service documentation
• Explanation of mobile-work limitations
• A process for authorising additional work

Be cautious with absolute promises

No honest diagnosis can guarantee the cause before appropriate checks. Be wary of a business that promises every repair can be completed roadside, quotes complex work without vehicle details or pushes parts before testing.

Independent repairer choice

The ACCC explains that consumers can choose an independent repairer and that the Motor Vehicle Information Scheme supports access to service and repair information. Manufacturer schedules and warranty conditions should still be followed.
